The History:


Jurong Parishioners used to go to the Parish of St. Joseph in Bt. Panjang. A chapel in honour of Our Lady Of Fatima was built at Tuas Village in 1958.
In 1967, the Parish was shifted to a rented shophouse and became the Taman Jurong Catholic Chapel. The chapel soon became insufficient for the church’s activities.


A new church was needed when the Catholic population of Boon Lay estate grew.
The current church was purchased from Jurong Town Corporation in 1973.
Construction started in 1975 and it was declared open by Mr. Noel Goh on 11th December 1976.

Subject: Jurong Temple

The Facts:
The temple was first built in the end of the 1980s and later relocated from Bukit Batok.
This temple is the combination of 8 different temples. The purpose of combining the temples was to maximize land use.

 

There are two buildings at the premises. The left building (shown on the top left) consists of three temples, while the right building (shown on top right) consists of five temples.

The History:

 

All eight temples which made up the Jurong Temple, originally came from Jalan Petua. They were located at different areas in the kampong.
The government wanted to use the land for developmental purposes, the temples in this area moved to its current location in the late 1980s.
The old temple still lies currently in its past location and was built in the 1950s.

Subject: Masjid Al-Mukminin

The History:


Before the mosque was built, muslims in the neighbourhood prayed on the field which is located beside the mosque. Festivals such as Korban was celebrated on this field.
Al-Mukminin means a ‘good person’. The mosque was officially opened in 22 June 1987. The mosque has Madrasah (religious classes for teens) on Sundays and Saturdays either in the morning or afternoon sessions. The building was built to accommodate 2000 people.

The History:
The mosque was declared open on 30 April 1978. Redevelopment of the mosque was carried out and completed at the end of year 2002. The redevelopment was to accommodate the large Muslim population expected in the Jurong West Extension area.

Islamic Civilization Corner:


The Islamic Civilization Corner is used to educate the people (both Muslims and non-Muslims) about the Islamic heritage and it also contains a replica of the Quran given to the mosque by the Saudi Consulate in 2006.

Subject: Sheng Leng Temple

Description:
This temple consists of a combination of three different temples, which include West Coast Hock Teng Si, Tian Gong Tan Zhao Ling Gong, and Xian Long Gong.
The temple moved to its current location in the year 1992 with the two other temples and settled around Jurong West St 41.

Tian Gong Tan Zhao Ling Gong Temple was erected in 1917 by villagers for the worship of "Tian Gong " and "Qian Shou Guan Yin " as well as to celebrate "Hungry Ghosts Festival" in the 7th Lunar month. It was relocated from Clementi Park along Sunset Grove.

The temple was relocated in 1983. A Preparatory Committee was formed in 1988 to raise funds.

On 28 Feb 1992, the Preparatory Committee jointly bought a piece of land from HDB Land Office with Sheng Leng Temple and West Coast Hock Teck Si for a term of a 30-year lease.

The construction commenced on 14 March 1993 and was completed within two years.

The committee registered themselves as a society in 1993 and the application was approved in 1994.

Subject: Sri Arulmigu Murugan Hindu Temple

Description:
The temple is named after a deity, Arulmigu Murugan, because it is a popular god for South Indians, among the other gods like Lord Shiva, Nine Planets, Lord Ganesha.

The History:
The land was bought in 1993 from the government, following that a temporary shelter was built in 1994.
Due to insufficient funds the plan for a new temple was shelved until 1998.
The second phase was to build a multi-storey workplace as well as the temple proper.
The building of the temple was finally completed in 2003 and was officially opened in 2005.

Why Choose Jurong?
The idea was mooted back in 1960s by a small group of Hindu devotees in Jurong who wanted a Hindu temple here. At that time the existing Hindu temples were at Serangoon Road or South Bridge Road.

The Artwork:


It took 5 years to do the artwork by professionals who rendered their services for free.
Every single masterpiece in the temple has a meaning, eg, Lord Murugan’s spearhead symbolizes that we must be open minded and remain focused in life. The spearhead resembles a spade which is wide at the bottom and pointed at the top.

The Facts:
The temple is run by volunteers, except for the priests who came all the way from South India.
The temple has a congregation size of 5,000 worshippers a month with a high number of Indians and Chinese devotees.
They conducts health screenings, monthly food distribution, cash handouts and bursary schemes for the needy.
The temple is funded by many indian philanthropies which include Mr. Singam who donated donated a large sum of money and one of the Indian devotees even donated his CPF money and the proceeds of the sale of his HDB flat to temple.
